Minnesota Lawyers Handling Mesothelioma Cases

Asbestos, a class of minerals, has been shown indisputably to cause mesothelioma, a rare terminal cancer. Minnesota alone suffered from 440 deaths over the twenty years before the turn of the 21st century. This is an uncommon 65% of total deaths related to asbestos.

Danger Asbestos Warning SignAsbestos can lead to mesothelioma through ingestion or inhalation, though inhalation is the most common mechanism of infection. There are three types of mesothelioma, depending on the location of origin. These include:

  • Pleural mesothelioma – originating in the chest wall, pleural mesothelioma is the most common type and is generally obtained through inhalation of asbestos fibers.
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma – originating in the abdominal cavity, peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common type and is likely obtained through ingestion.
  • Pericardial mesothelioma – originating in the heart sac, pericardial mesothelioma is the least common type and the mechanism of infection is not well understood.

In addition, the histology can be described in one of three ways:

  • Epitheliod – these cells are much less dangerous, affecting the external tissues surrounding the internal organs. They are also more common.
  • Sarcomatoid – these cells are the least common and also the most dangerous. It affects secondary tissues, such as bone, fat or muscles.
  • Biphasic – this cell class contains a mixture of epitheliod and sarcomatoid.
